This is a basic overview of general mesothelioma statistics. The statistics highlight the following aspects:

  • Asbestos exposure
  • Symptoms
  • Cases
  • Occurrence
  • Treatment
  • Mortality rate
  • Death rate

Mesothelioma statistics: Asbestos exposure

  • 2-10% of people with prolonged asbestos exposure will develop pleural mesothelioma; which is the commonest type of mesothelioma.
  • An estimate of 11 million people were said to have been exposed to asbestos between the years 1940 and 1978.

There are four common types of asbestos exposures:

  • The Military
  • Asbestos products
  • Asbestos related occupation
  • Environmental exposure

Mesothelioma statistics: Symptoms

It takes 20-50 years for mesothelioma symptoms to develop. The time frame between a person’s first exposure and developing of symptoms is called the latency period.

  • The average latency for men is 47.9 years
  • The average latency for women is 53.3 years

Mesothelioma statistics: Cases

  • Annually there are between 2000-3000 new mesothelioma cases reported.
  • Men are 4.6 times more likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma than women.
  • 95% of all mesothelioma patients are white.
  • People over the age of 60 years are 10 times more at risk of developing mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma statistics: Treatment

Starting from April 2015, there have been 250 clinical trials conducted by researchers. Of the 250 clinical trials, 166 were conducted in the U.S.

Mesothelioma statistics: Mortality Rate

  • On average 40% of pleural mesothelioma patients survive the first year after treatment.
  • Women diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma have 3 times more chances of survival than men
  • Younger patients have significantly higher chances of survival than older patients.

Mesothelioma statistics: Death rate

  • Between 1999 and 2013 there were more than 37,000 mesothelioma deaths in the U.S.
  • In 2013 alone there were 2,497 people who died of mesothelioma
