The city is a major tourist destination and is home to Walt Disney World, Sea World and the Universal Orlando Resort. The city is also home to the second largest university in the United States- the University of Central Florida. The university is said to be the second largest because of its large enrolment numbers.

In the 1880s, the city experienced a land boom after the South Florida Railroad laid tracks through the city. Housing developments continued into the 1920s. Housing developments and projects were halted after several hurricanes devastated Florida in the late 1920s. World War II brought military personnel into the city. This was through the opening of the Orlando Air Force Base and a United States Naval Training Center. The site of the Orlando Air Force Base later became McCoy Jetport and is now known as Orlando International Airport.
