There are many articles discussing the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and survival rate of patients with mesothelioma or asbestosis. However, few go on to discuss how patients live on after the diagnosis of the disease. Once a person has received treatment which may be surgery that aspect of your cancer may be complete. However, it is possible for some cancers to return years after one’s treatment has ended. Therefore, it’s strongly advised that a patient goes for all their follow-up visits which may include exams, blood tests, etc. And other tests to see if the cancer has returned.

According to one mesothelioma patient interview, it was noted that the key to survival is having the right support system. The patient mentioned that in her case, she had five dogs who all played an important role in her recovery. She mentions, “there were days when I didn’t want to move, but when you have somebody depending on you, you have to. I had to get up and feed them and let them out. They were a diversion. I could sit outside with them and watch them when I couldn’t do much else. They were loyal. They would come sit in my lap and sleep on the bed. They were my companions; they were terrific.”

While her dogs her support system, she also had brothers and extended family who lived close by. And her family knew what she needed as well as what she did not need. The patient noted that, she is a private person and does not like surprises and her support system respected that. Rather than show up unannounced, they would call and ask if it was okay to come over. Another support system mentioned is that American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society provided and assisted with transport expenses as well as lodging help when required.
