History
Panama City is located on the Florida Panhandle, along the Emerald Coast that is bordering the Gulf of Mexico. The area was initially populated by Native Americans. Panama City became incorporated into a city in 1909.
It experienced rapid growth with the introduction of the railways into the city and thereafter businessmen began promoting the value of the city’s land. Early on the city’s economy consisted of mainly of oranges, lemons and grapefruits, but lumber was the backbone of the economy at the time. As a result, the Saint Andrews Bay Lumber Company built a sawmill in the city and became the major employer at the time. In 1931 Southern Kraft Corporation, a subsidiary of the International Paper Company, invested and opened a paper mill in the city.
World War II transformed the city into a thriving seaport. In January 1941, Tyndall Air Force Base opened and off duty military staff were drawn to the beachfront of the city. Many of these military personnel returned to make the city their home in later years. War time also brought about the founding of a naval base in the area. This naval base was eventually developed into Naval Coastal Systems.
