Mesothelioma: The case of Tampa, Florida

Tampa, Florida is the fifty fourth (54th) largest city in the United States. Four years after Florida officially became a state, in 1849, the village of Tampa became incorporated as a town.

Asbestos History

In the mid-1880s, phosphate was discovered in the Bone Valley region of Tampa. Tampa mined and exported the phosphate and earned itself the reputation of being the phosphate capital of the world. With railroad construction came the steel industry. Tampa became home to coal fired power plants, shipyards and steel corporations. Tampa’s fitting location on Florida’s western coast line makes it an ideal site for a shipyard; as it proves to be accessible to the Mexican Gulf.

The active manufacturing, shipyard and construction industry used asbestos products common to each industry. This put workers at risk of asbestos exposure. Job sites where asbestos exposure was known to have occurred have been

  • Seaboard Air Line Railroad Company
  • Union Carbide Corporation
