Patients of Mesothelioma Study

It is sad to note that elderly patients suffering from mesothelioma are unable to receive treatment. This article will discuss the findings of a recent study focused on a target group of 4,526 patients.

The study results were published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology. The study looked at 4,526 patients that had an age range of 80 years and above who died from non-metastatic pleural mesothelioma. It was found that 63% of the patients were only observed by physicians. But were prevented from receiving any treatment that would extend their lives.

Reaction to Chemo

It was noted by researchers that 22% of patients who received chemotherapy had a median survival rate of 9.5 months. However, for patients who did not receive chemotherapy their survival rate was 4.1 months. 2% of the patients had both chemotherapy and aggressive surgery of which the highest median survival rate was 12.2 months.

It is a well-known fact that mesothelioma is a deadly cancer and unfortunately there is no cure. To top it off early detection is very rare. However, the study found that survival rates are not necessarily shortened and mortality rates do not necessarily increase with age. It was noted that the median age of mesothelioma diagnosis is 72 years.

Life Expectancy after Surgery

Because of late diagnosis the elderly are often unable to tolerate aggressive surgery. In addition, this was proven by the results of the study which found that, of those elderly patients who underwent surgical resection:

  • 28.5% only lived for 90 days
  • 11% live for only 30 days

That being said, patients can choose to undergo surgery if they have access to a mesothelioma specialty center.

Mesothelioma is caused by being exposed to asbestos; in most cases the cancer develops at work. However, it can be as a result of being exposed to old tiling, insulation, etc. in the home. You may be able to file a claim to hold those responsible for your exposure. Contact a Vinson Law Office mesothelioma attorney today for legal advice and representation.
