Some causes of mesothelioma are unclear, however, there are many contributing factors that increase chances of getting it. Mesothelioma is still a mystery for those studying and trying to cure it. However, knowing the common causes may help increase the knowledge of how to combat it. This article and the subsequent one will discuss common causes of mesothelioma.
Common Causes of Mesothelioma
Some common causes of mesothelioma include the following:
- Inhaling or swallowing asbestos – the common source of mesothelioma cancer that affects employees and others is asbestos. Asbestos fibers lodge into the lung walls and warp the cells inside the body. Asbestos materials can be found in older buildings, where the lining of walls was used to insulate the houses. Inhaling fibers could lead to a death sentence if cancer spreads and results in untold irreversible injury to the victim.
- DNA damage – the DNA in the body suffers stress and changes caused by mesothelioma. As a result, the genes in the person will not receive the necessary instructions to carry out certain functions. In some cases, these genes will change how the body grows. DNA damage may also greatly increase the cell growth and recreate the already injured cells. DNA damage results in cells not having the correct time to die or any control on their growth and structure. This leads to cancer eating away at the person affected by mesothelioma.
- Large amounts of asbestos – generally, the contact and inhaling of asbestos fibers will lead to mesothelioma. However, large amounts of the same contact do not usually lead to this type of cancer. Those with minimal contact with asbestos may not even get the illness. Study shows that some individuals have a higher chance and risk of this type of cancer than others. So, factors such as genes in the body may result in increased risk of mesothelioma.
